Laboratory of Zoology and Hydrobiology, within the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University, in collaboration with the Biology Alumni Association (IKABIO) and the Biology Student Association (Himabio), organized a discussion event with FMIPA Untan Biology alumni on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The event was titled Indonesian Fishing World and the Role of Biology Students as Pioneers of Exploration and Conservation of Fish in Indonesia. Marcel Alveri Adis, a graduate of the 2013 Biology Study Program, who has engaged in research and exploration of freshwater species in West Kalimantan, particularly in Pontianak City and Kubu Raya Regency. The primary objective of this activity was to provide insights into opportunities available for students interested in fisheries and to explore how students and biology graduates can contribute to the exploration and conservation of fish species in West Kalimantan. During the event, Marcel shared his journey and passion for fish exploration, detailing how he initiated a collaborative project that began during his studies and has continued to evolve, allowing him to establish a personal brand centered on his expertise in identifying freshwater fish in West Kalimantan. Dr. Kustiati, M.Si., Chairperson of the Biology Department, expressed her gratitude to the laboratory and the resource persons for the successful execution of this event, which has had a positive impact on biology students and the department as a whole. This activity served to inspire and motivate students in identifying their interests and contributing to the field of fish conservation in West Kalimantan, a region characterized by wetlands and tropical peat. Additionally, the event included the presentation of a book authored by Marcel Alveri Adis, which focuses on the fish species of Kubu Raya. This publication, a notable achievement of FMIPA Untan biology alumni, has sold over 100 copies and provides essential information regarding the diversity of freshwater fish in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan.
